Using a downloaded character!
To use a character from the characters page here at d2sector you only need to do a couple of things. Firstly you need to make sure that you have the latest patch installed otherwise some of the characters wont show up in the character select screen. If you don't have the latest patch just connect to battle.net and it will patch you automatically.
To use a character once you've downloaded it, open the "charactername".zip
file using a program that handles the .zip extension eg. WinZip
(http://winzip.com).
Copy all of its contents to your Diablo II save folder. Eg. C:\games\Diablo
II\save\
Now open Diablo II and the character(s) should now be in the character
select screen,
NOTE: The characters are only for open battle.net, single player
and TCP/IP games. NOT closed battle.net.
Editing / Making a character.
To make a character you can either make it all in
shadow master or make the base of the character in EricJWin's stat
editor and then insert the items using shadow master.
To make the character in EricJWin's d2 stat editor, first download
it from the editors' page (der). Open it up, type in a character
name, select the character type then click on the "max all"
button and also the "Set all skills" button. Now press
the "Save Button".

Close the stat editor and test out the character in Diablo II (play
the character duh!!), and open Shadow Master. Open the character
you just saved by going to "file > open" and selecting
the character eg. d2sector_test.d2s. Now goto the items tab and
import items into the character by right-clicking in a spare space
and selecting "import item". Locate some items that you
have (if you don't have any goto the diablo II items page on this
site, download a pack and then extract them), select one and click
"open". The item is now in your character. Repeat this
until you've filled up the character with the items you want. Click
"save"

You can also edit other character options such as their hireling
and what acts / waypoints they have by going to their respective
"tabs" in shadowmaster.
THAT'S IT! Open Diablo II, select the character you
just created and 'your off'!.
Make sure that the character is in your Diablo II Save directory!
NOTE: if shadowmaster displays the error message below, click "yes".

Exporting Items + Using the colour guard program.
You might want to export items for many reasons, the most common
is to change the colour of it. To export an item open shadowmaster,
open a character, goto the items tab, right-click on the item you
want to export and select "export item". Chose a location
to save it to e.g. c:\stuff\. That's it! The item from your character
has now been saved as a .d2i file.
To change the colour of an item, first of all it MUST be unique.
Open the colour guard program found on the "Diablo II Items"
page and click on open. Select the file you exported just before
or another one that you have downloaded and click "open".
Now click in the area where it has "Black, The Humongous, 1"
and use the up and down arrows on your keyboard to change the colour
to what you want. Once you have selected what you want e.g. "Bright
White, Swordguard, 1" select "save". Now the item
(*.d2i) has been modified. Open shadowmaster once more and import
the item you just changed the colour of just like you imported an
item when "editing / importing a character" (above). Save
the character and your done :)
